In a post that quickly went viral, Musk stated, "It will take an airplane crashing and killing hundreds of people for them to change this crazy policy of DIE." His use of "DIE" instead of "DEI" was an intentional play on words, seemingly mocking efforts to create more equitable workplaces. At the time, his statement was widely criticized as alarmist, conspiratorial, and even irresponsible. However, just over a year later, a tragic event has reignited discussions about his words.

On January 29, 2025, a catastrophic midair collision occurred near Washington, D.C., involving an American Airlines regional passenger jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter. The crash resulted in the deaths of all passengers and crew members aboard both aircraft, sending shockwaves through the aviation industry and the nation.

In the wake of the tragedy, Musk’s statement has resurfaced, with some questioning whether his words were an eerie prediction or an attempt to frame a narrative against DEI policies.
